Cinematic Wedding Aesthetics- The Parent Trap: A Nancy Meyers Classic
Before Nancy Meyers brought about Coastal Grandmother in “Something’s Gotta Give” she created the 90s film “The Parent Trap”. Every Millennial girl couldn’t decide if they wanted to grow to be Hallie Parker living in Napa Valley, CA or Annie James in London, England. Each location providing beautiful aesthetics yet so different. In this post I break down the details of each wedding scene in hopes it will give inspiration for your future day.
First Wedding
This scene invokes emotions of intimacy, secrecy, young or quick love. The wedding was a cruise elopement yet classic, timeless, and provides East Coast style.
The Queen Elizabeth 2 was designed for the transatlantic service from home port of Southampton, UK to New York.
Decor and attire worn was simple. Although taking place in the 80s, nothing appears dated. The brides dress was a simple silhouette and had her hair worn in half up-do. White flowers, linen, and candles were set as decor.
The Bridal Shop Scene
This scene is set in London, England. The mother, Elizabeth James owns and designs dresses for a bridal salon. Every girl growing up in the 90s and early 00s remembers this scene. Hallie gets to take photos with the bride while “Never Let You Go” plays in the background.
This scene definitely provides a time capsule for 90s bridal looks. A dropped waist, gloves, sequins and satin combo, a tiered wedding cake with pillars, and a top hat under a veil.
Details I love: The veil over the flowers. I do not know the purpose of this, but it’s pretty. I also love the volume the top hat created for the veil. However, I think few brides could pull off a top hat on their wedding day. What do you think?
Second Wedding / Final Scene
The final wedding ends back on a cruise ship. A small affair but more joy showcasing through. This time the couple is sharing the day with loved ones.
Details include white roses, off white satin dresses, and 90s sheer paneling and satin collar.
Can someone please get married on a boat and have their wedding cake shaped like the Queen Elizabeth 2? This is my favorite detail.
Real Life Wedding Inspiration
Here are real life weddings that I think Elizabeth James would approve of. Full length veils, strapless ballgowns, white linens and bouquets, sparklers, and black tie attire.
I plan on making this a series. Are you pulling inspiration from cinema for your day? What movie should I do next?
